The name of the stone comes from the Latin word for stone and the Persian word “lāzaward” meaning sky or heavens. The highest quality deposits are found in the Sar-e-Sand deposit in the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan's Kochka River Valley. Unlike most minerals, Lapis Lazuli is not found in traditional mines, but caves instead! Lapis is also found in the Andes in Chile, Canada, Russia, Burma, and the United States.
